Natural methods to gently encourage labor to start
|
|
|
Prepare for labor and birth Before you get labor started, get everything together for a homebirth or a trip to the hospital. Have your supplies gathered and your bag packed.
Relax and reduce stress Get into a peaceful, accepting, and patient state of mind. Don't rush. Natural methods of induction should be gentle and unhurried. Relaxing with meditation, warm baths, aromatherapy, soothing music, etc., may help initiate labor. Stress inhibits labor.
Choose an induction method
Safe and natural techniques for inducing labor at home include visualizations, meditations, and affirmations; belly massage and accupressure; nipple stimulation and orgasm; and herbal and homeopathic remedies.
Get started Apply your chosen induction method. For herbal remedies, consult Susan Weed's Wise Woman Herbal for the Childbearing Year (Woodstock: Ash Tree Publishing, 1986). Options include:
Homeopathic Caulophyllum, 200x, repeated every half-hour for two hours.
Blue Cohosh tincture, 3-8 drops in a glass of warm water or tea, repeated every half-hour for up to four hours until contractions are regular.
Enema with an infusion of one ounce Blue Cohosh root in a pint jar of boiling water, left at room temperature for eight hours. (Note: Enemas, like castor oil and spicy foods, may cause digestive distress that increases discomfort during labor.)
Remember: Natural labor induction methods may only work if your baby is ready with mature lungs. If your induction efforts don't pay off, wait a day or so before trying again.
Enjoy your labor and childbirth When the time comes, relax and enjoy your labor. Your baby is on the way, working along side you.
